3 Notable Changes to VFW-sponsored Liquor Liabilit

staff - 9/17/2014

The VFW Post Insurance Program has announced some changes to its Liquor Liability Insurance coverage that mean more robust coverage for VFW Posts. Enhancements to the coverage include:

1.     Liquor service at special events—coverage is now extended to the furnishing, distribution, sale, service or use of alcoholic beverages at "special events” held at, or sponsored by, the Post. Since alcohol service is common at special events, this is a significant enhancement that had been excluded from coverage previously.

2.     Defense counsel coverage—the cost of your Defense Counsel to defend a liquor-related claim is now paid outside the limit of liability. This means that the cost for legal counsel to represent your Post will not reduce the amount of insurance available to pay for other claim expenses and/or settlement costs.

3.     Additional Liquor Liability limit available—Posts with a Liquor Liability limit of at least $1,000,000/$2,000,000 now have the option to purchase an Umbrella policy that will provide additional Liquor Liability coverage, if needed.

These changes are effective back to the inception date of the current policy for all Posts who already have Liquor Liability coverage with the VFW Post Insurance Program (administered by Lockton Affinity, LLC) and will be included for all new policies issued.

According to the By-Laws Section 709-Control of Units; Any Post, County Council, District or Department owning and/or operating, directly or by reason of a holding company or other entity substantially controlled by the Post, County Council, District or Department or its members, a canteen, clubroom or other facility available to members or guests must maintain general liability insurance, including, if necessary or appropriate, liquor liability insurance.
